A Whole New Way of Office-ing! Houston’s New Executive Suites; Part Function, Part Art!

(article from Zan Magazine, May/ June 2012 issue. Pages 64-66.)

When you think of executive suites, less than inspiring images come to mind: cold floors, drab walls, a grumpy receptionist. But not anymore! The vision of The VIllage Executive Suites offers business professionals a futuristic office space: Upscale office suites and amenities paired with the style of a New York Soho art gallery.

So instead of cold floors and drab walls, VES provides a unique ambiance to its tenants with decorative finishes and custom art adorning the walls.

Imago Dei created all the wall finishes using specialty products such as, American Clay, Diamond Veneer, Venetian Plaster, SIlver Leaf, and Lusterstone Mica Plasters. Current paintings on display were created by Jeremy and Jamie Wells, the owners of VES, and contemporary artist Henry Membreno. Additionally, VES plans to host four gallery openings a year, yielding an influx of traffic and patrons to benefit the artists and tenants.

Of his vision of creating VES, Jeremy Wells says,

“As an artist I recognize how environments effect space, mood and productivity. I have been creating environments for my clients for years and it was a dream come true to put all I have observed together in one space.” In an interview Zan got the chance to find out more about this new posh Houston spot- built with today’s sophisticated professional in mind!

ZAN: What was the idea behind The Village Executive Suites?

Jeremy Wells: We loved the neighborhood feel of the Rice Village and wanted to create a workplace environment that caters to the many entrepreneurs who live in and near the neighborhood. Being both artists and entrepreneurs we weren’t interested in building your average office building. We designed a space that is extremely efficient yet captivating and beautiful. We felt there was a need to create a space that was confident in its professionalism, fully equipped with up-to-the-minute technology, while fun in its creative modern aesthetic.

The people who work here are passionate about what they do and we thought the space they do it in should facilitate that as much as possible. The Village Executive Suites does just that through the aesthetically engaging interiors, the many amenities included, and the friendly support staff. Even at the architectural stage we designed a workplace whose common areas could double as an art gallery. The lives of the people who office here are anything but static which is why we designed a dynamic art exhibit which rotates throughout the year displaying the works of both emerging and established artists. The art has a lively energy that really makes the space come alive.

What needs does it fill for people?

One of the first things we do with clients considering our facility is sit down and consult with them to find out if we think their business would be a good fit for the building. We are filling a specific need for many entrepreneurs by providing them with a cost effective and streamlined method they can incorporate into their business model. We cater to small businesses that need a space away from their home yet don’t necessarily need a large office with all the overhead associated with it. By bundling services such as support staff, furniture, phone systems, internet and phone service, mail and printing services as well as a business-ready conference room there is tremendous value for our clients to office here. One other perk of having an office here is that there are no business names on the individual suites, this gives our client’s visitors the impression that the entire office is theirs and that is a pretty impressive assumption.

Being an entrepreneur is often a lonely journey. We’ve designed an environment that facilitates a sense of community where entrepreneurs can share both their victories and their challenges. It’s in these kinds of encounters where vital new perspectives are discovered or even new business opportunities. We find that besides the obvious networking opportunities, there is also a synergy that drives peak performers to reach their full potential.

What is the vision for the near future?

We have an ear to the ground listening to visionaries describe the office of tomorrow and what types of environments will inspire people to work at their full capacity and efficiency. When we see a potential service or opportunity to help our business owners be more successful we will pivot and adapt quickly. In addition to this agile business model we are designed to be able to implement new services constantly. We are already planning even more ways to expand and perfect our current facilities.

How is the face of ‘offices’ changing in our fast moving mobile world?

Tomorrow’s office is seamlessly integrated with technology that meets the practical needs of office workers. It is an office where technology does not isolate us from one another but through increased productivity enables us to develop deeper and more meaningful relationships. The idea of a long-term commitment has changed drastically and tomorrow’s workers will need a space to work that responds to their ever changing needs. We’ve proactively responded to this by offering flexible furniture packages, the ability to scale up or down your office space needs as well as offering extremely flexible terms. Collaboration is continually being recognized as an important business tool both within an organization and between other organizations. Our workplace design embraces this. Work is increasingly being done on mobile platforms and we’ve embraced that not only by providing multiple common spaces to work with WiFi but also by providing seamlessly integrated Virtual Office programs where someone can use our address, a phone number and phone service, as well as hold meetings in the conference room. We’ve offered this in response to the many entrepreneurs out there who are not quite ready to bite off a full time office commitment but are ready to fully leverage current technology to literally house their company in a Virtual Office environment.

The fact that the phones in our pockets today are more powerful than our desktop computers a decade ago has taught us that more can be accomplished with less these days – and the same goes for our offices. By leveraging shared common space and current technology our entrepreneurs are realizing that productivity does not necessitate a large office building.

In this age of transparency and accountability excess is generally frowned upon. We’ve designed a place that is luxurious without feeling excessive.

Local contemporary artist, Henry Membreño’s, “New Works” are emotive abstractions comprised by fusing acrylics, pigments, and graphite on various substrates. In his exploration of gesture, he seek to develop recurring motions that illustrate the development and degeneration of memory.

Membreno’s family fled to Mexico from El Salvador in 1973. Because of his affiliation with Jose Napoleon Duarte’s stifled Christian Democratic party, Membreno’s father was scheduled for political assassination, along with his family, by the growing military death squads. After seeking temporary asylum in Mexico, they continued to the US where artist Henry Membreño was born in Weslaco, Texas in 1975 as the first American-born child. He spent his formative years in Houston and continued his education in NYC. After graduating from The Cooper Union in 1998, he remained in Manhattan as a life-drawing instructor. Membreño arrived in Los Angeles in 1999 working in television and fashion design. He left LA in 2006, returning to Texas where he now works as a fine artist.

Pick up the April/ May copy of Austin-San Antonio Urban Home Magazine to see a design trends article on Decorative Finishes that spotlights Imago Dei’s work. Two featured projects were created by Interior Designer Laurie Pearson, of Laurie Pearson Designs. Imago Dei created the decorative finishes for both of these rooms (see images below.) And of course, the stunning photography was by Lynsey Jones of Lynsey Creative.

Decorative Finishes by Tavaner K. Sullivan

an excerpt from the article:
For as long as people have sought shelter, decorative finishes have been used to personalize, add character and complete a space. Whether the elegance of a plastered wall, the story of a mural or the mesmerizing detail of stenciling, all have stood the test of time and evolved into respected forms of art…

Jeremy Wells, co-founder of Imago Dei, approaches his decorative finishes in the same way he does his fine art; focusing on texture, composition and color. Because of his background in fine art, he pays particular attention to color theory, how layered colors create new colors and their affects on a space.

“You can’t pick colors in a vacuum. You have to approach it holistically and think about everything surrounding the surface that you are creating,” he says. “Take into consideration the light and the way it moves throughout the day and space, the flooring, fabrics, furniture and the use of the space.”

In decorative finishes, portion and scale are just as important as color. For example, in his Houston office, Wells pairs a neutral, cool gray wall next with a smaller vivid and intense turquoise wall. An entire room of such a color would be exhausting, but in a small section, it is just invigorating enough. ”There is a delicate balance,” says Wells.

When working with a large space, think subtle, and when going bold, think of sweets, Wells recommends. “If you eat too many sweets, you get sick. If you want to go bold, do it in small doses- an accent wall, a powder room, a vaulted ceiling.”…

When creating decorative finishes, Wells offers three essentials to keep in mind: 1) Work with someone who understands the purpose of the space and has the track record to create and achieve a beautiful space. 2) Not all finishes are right for all spaces. 3) Think of the space holistically and design a finish that will be well-suited for the room as a whole and does not compete with the other design elements.

Imago Dei has had the privilege of collaborating with the renown Lynne T. Jones, interior designer from Houston, TX. Lynne ‘s interiors boast Texas elegance and fresh design. Below you will find projects where Lynne’s designs include a backsplash tile mural painted by Imago Dei and she designed a gorgeous master bathroom with decorative finishes created by Imago Dei. She has also placed Imago Dei’s fine art paintings as accents to her interiors. We think these rooms turned out beautiful and hope you will visit Lynne’s website to see more of her work.

The Living Room: Imago Dei created a custom medallion designed to coordinate with the existing chandelier and wall finish. The medallion is multi-layered with metallic glazes.

Imago Dei, Custom Ceiling Design.

The Powder Room was completely refinished (walls, trim, ceiling and sink cabinet). On the walls Imago Dei created a metallic glaze with hand-painted Art Noveau style stenciling. The trim and millwork were painted with a metallic glaze and added dark accents in the grooves. The ceiling was a silver leaf treatment and the sink cabinet was completely refinished with a crushed silver leaf finish. JPDG installed new fixtures, new counter top and a beautiful mirror (carved black marble, its really gorgeous).

Austin is known for its eclectic style and many Austin residents use their homes as modes for self expression. Such is the case in the newly built home of Beverly Curci in South Austin. She decided to hire Luis Angulo, of Imago Dei, for his decorative painting expertise. “Beverly’s main request was that there had to be color and lots of it!” says Luis.

Over a period of two months, Luis and his team of artists created beautiful and daring designs by combining innovative Hand-Painted Murals, bold Venetian and Lime plasters, and intricate Custom Stenciling.

Imago Dei, Hand Painted Celestial Ceiling Mural.

In a world where most people are content with beige and grey, Imago Dei experimented with striking color. Such is the case in the study, where a rich peacock blue chair first draws your eyes in and then upwards to a hand painted celestial map mural. The mural represents the universe as it was understood before Galileo, with the Earth in the center and all the other planets orbiting around it. The mural has gold leaf accents reminiscent of Pre-Renaissance art.

Imago Dei, Detail: Hand Painted Celestial Ceiling Mural.

Imago Dei, Hand Painted Mosaic Tile Mural.

For the dining room Imago Dei created an environment influenced by designs from Pompeii. The focal point is an impressive hand-painted mosaic mural painted on canvas and applied to the ceiling. Imago Dei artists spent weeks designing the mosaic illusion. ”Without our amazing graphic designers and in house vinyl-cutter, a mural of this type would have been impossible to do,” says Luis. To compliment the ornate mural, the walls received an earthy yellow plaster texture treatment accented with hand painted panel stenciling.

The master bedroom boasts purple Venetian plastered walls that are accented with silver leafed mural of cherry blossoms. The blossoms appear to be whimsically blowing in the wind throughout the room. With its sculptural sconces, crystal chandelier, lush drapes and incredible bed frame it is a room fit for a palace. It has a rich and romantic feel to it.

Botecelli’s Venus is the dramatic central figure of the Master Bath’s stained-glass window. This feature is flanked by wall murals drawing the eye up to the ceiling where the shell is echoed, encapsulating the intimate space created by rich textures and vibrant blues.

Imagine arriving at your office building and parking your vehicle or bike practically at the front door. You walk in to the common area where natural light streams inside from an abundance of large windows. Upbeat, hand-selected contemporary music softly fills the air as subtle background motivation. Artistic, cool-toned wall treatments serve as canvases for an array of paintings and other artwork. Once there, you sit down in your own space with similar surroundings. And the creative juices begin to flow.

Welcome to The Village Executive Suites, a new boutique office facility in the Rice Village area with a focus on marrying the work environment with an art gallery for a symbiotic partnership. Creating such a catalytic setting for inspiration is the brainchild of owner Jeremy Wells, also founder and co-partner with wife Jamie of Imago Dei, a company specializing in custom murals, decorative finishes and fine art and the anchor tenant at the site.

Wells takes us on a tour of the two-story, 6,500-square-foot facility, located at 2525 Robinhood. The lobby, with a long table and contemporary bar stools by German designer Konstantin Grcic in the community work space, eye-catching artwork by Wells and, at right, the receptionist’s desk. An “Ether” chandelier by Italian design studio Murano Duein in cascading glass bubbles peaks through a round opening to dangle into the multi-purpose room. A fully equipped kitchen is to the left of the communal island, as is a windowed-door to the patio, where you’ll find plenty of comfortable seating around bright-hued, cafe-style tables.

The Village Executive Suites, Exterior View. Photo Credit: Lynsey Creative

Wells spotted the commercial property two years ago, walked in and saw it had “very good bones,” as he put it. His 10-year-old Imago Dei operation had been located elsewhere in Houston in a warehouse with the typical executive-suite format of private offices, stale and stagnant — definitely not conducive to creative thinking. ”It seems like in the past, we’ve thought workers do their best when isolated from one another, so that everyone can focus on their tasks,” Wells says. “And having a large office equated to success. ”Now, we know that community and collaboration is so important in the work environment,” he continues. “None of us do our jobs alone, so we’re promoting efficiency and high productivity in a smaller space. We’re providing a business model that helps everyone involved be a success.”

The Village Executive Suites, completely remodeled using corrugated metal siding, xeriscaping and water-permeable pavers every other parking space. The suites, complete with a security system with 24-hour key fob access and video surveillance of the grounds and community spaces, accommodate offices for 15 onsite customers.

Imago Dei, Jeremy Wells Photo Credit: Lynsey Creative

The Village Executive Suites, Lounge View. Photo Credit: Lynsey Creative

Wells talks about the some of the smart-design aspects of, and immediate plans for, The Village Executive Suites: “All walls in the common areas are American Clay, which is as green as you can get. The clay absorbs carbon dioxide, repels dust and emits negative ions, which restore energy.” And being completely natural and free of any VOCs, the clay surfacing, applied by Imago Dei artists, gives off a scent of fresh rain, he adds.

Countertops throughout the suites are of recycled glass and the concrete flooring reached its slick, modern appearance after removing a foot layer, sanding and then coating and polishing. On the agenda are quarterly gallery openings Imago Dei hosts and curates. The Village Executive Suites also affords Imago Dei a showroom to display its wall treatments and works on canvas.

The lobby area looking toward the front of the building, with a break area in the foreground with red stacking chairs by German designer Konstantin Grcic and a conference room in the background, the latter a high-tech space available to onsite and virtual-suite customers. ”Goccia” pendant lights by Italian maker Slamp hang above the common table.

The Village Executive Suites, Conference Room. Photo Credit: Lynsey Creative

The main conference room, kitchen, patio and entire lobby are available to all onsite customers and to persons who need a “virtual suite.” For example of a virtual suite, Wells offers, an attorney who recently ventured out on her own didn’t want to take calls from her home-based office, worrying about the possibility of interruptive and distracting noises (barking dogs or crying babies, for example). So she secured the customer-based services offered at The Village Executive Suites. ”All marketing materials come here, all business-related mail comes here and all phone calls are redirected here,” he says. “We have capacity built in to our technology to support hundreds of these clients.”

A look into the conference room, with a dry-erase board constructed of repurposed glass and large, substantial table (built by Wells) wired for six work stations.

The Village Executive Suites, Conference Room.
Inside the conference room, which is equipped for video conferencing with a wide-angle, 1080-HD webcam, is a large computer monitor mounted on one wall. Above, light is radiated and not projected from a ceiling inset lined with silver leaf. Light bulbs throughout the suites are hidden in architectural elements.

Past the reception’s desk is a light-filled hallway with walls finished by Imago Dei artists in a polished veneer plaster to add reflective qualities, making spaces seem more expansive and brighter. And just around the corner . . . well, Wells doesn’t have to point out the centerpiece stairwell, now called “The Tower” as defined by the Venetian wall finishing in bright lime green. The entire work is a group project by artists of Imago Dei.

The sculptural chandelier, designed by Wells, is fabricated from glass, plastics, acrylics and metal with layered horizontal glass panes, one covered in colorful striped glass bead. Large silver nodes are suspended from the grids.

Wells opens doors to the first-floor suites, which are fronted with privacy glass and inside, offer window views of the garden. Modern modular furniture is provided for each unit to create an minimalist atmosphere — and to inspire ingenuity. ”We want to keep the look consistent, so we furnish the offices with high-end furniture,” Wells says. “All lights are on occupancy sensors to be wise in our use of electricity. Our wall treatments continue throughout the suites and original artwork is in every office.” Fifteen individual offices, averaging about 100 square feet with the option to combine multiple spaces, are available for lease starting at $1,000. One of the first-floor suites, with environmentally friendly Flor carpet squares to come for comfort and sound absorption.

The Village Executive Suites, Office Suite.
Wells continues about the executive suites: “Each office is individually pre-wired and networked through a special Watchgaurd firewall that provides tenants to have their own individual secure network while still being able to access the Internet and print to the Lexmark printer right from their office.” Many of The Village Executive Suites’ services are available to the public, too. ”One nice feature of our public amenities is that pricing is being published through Square Inc.’s new Register app,” Wells says. “Any Square Card Case user in the area can view on their phone what we offer, and when they arrive at the door, we already know their name. ” Confirmed clients can then pay by credit card or simply have their purchase applied to their tab. “Tab transactions are automatically completed by their phone when they leave,” Wells says.

A central custom work station at Imago Dei is actually a 14-foot glass panel Wells reclaimed from a former skyscraper, which he then silver leafed and finished in an enamel gloss.

Imago Dei, Office Workstation.
Clean lines and environmentally conscious features are incorporated into the exterior planning, too. The awning is a polycarbonate piece used for greenhouses, allowing light to filter through. Wells chose landscaping plants that thrive in Houston’s climate, and even added eucalyptus he missed from his home state of California to bring its captivating aroma along the walkway to the entrance. Front planting beds are home to agave cacti surrounded by large, smooth, black river rocks, a combination creating a Zen-like garden.

The Village Executive Suites, Exterior View.
While Wells has Imago Dei artists based in California, Austin and Dallas, The Village Executive Suites in Houston is his start-up business for modern-edge working spaces with a hip, casual edge that facilitates a community environment for clients. ”We do have plans in place where, yes, we’ll expand this concept to other cities,” he says. “There’s never been a time like now when you can operate even a multi-million dollar business in a 100-square-foot office space. ”So right now,” he adds with a smile, “it’s first-come, first-served.”

Utopia Oasis

This lovely home is located in the outskirts of Utopia, TX and is only accessible by a dirt road crossed by a creek. The view for miles is the beautiful Texas Hill Country, wildflowers, deer, and wild turkeys. The home was designed in a Spanish Hacienda Style, infused with bright colors, authentic decorative finishes and rustic furniture. The custom finishes created for the Martin residence consisted of a plaster treatment made from American Clay Enjarre, and was applied to the interior walls. The plaster finish is created from a multi-layered rustic application. Imago Dei artists used approximately 120 bags of Enjarre and the whole project took about two and a half months with a team 5 artists. Imago Dei artists also created a massive mural on the tower ceiling inspired by the design of Mexican tiles. The house was built by Judy Ramsey. Also, the Interior furnishings and decorative finishes were chosen by Judy, her daughter Julie, and homeowner Betty Martin. Betty and John Martin are avid hunters who enjoy the great outdoors. Their home displays this passion. The Martins are some of our favorite clients with the gift of hospitality. They treated our team to delicious dinners as we worked!

Look at this beautiful bedroom created by Luis Angulo and our Austin Artists. On the walls we created a soft Metallic Faux Finish. The ceiling is adorned with a Ribboned Stencil Finish. This bedroom is a Spring Retreat!

“The finishes were picked out and custom made for independent designer Lisa Shauger, from Lisa Scott Interiors Design. The remodeling included bringing in all new furniture and even installing a gorgeous chandelier where a ceiling fan used to hang. Lisa achieved a high-end sophisticated look while staying within the client’s budget.” ~Luis Angulo.
